General hardness (GH) indicates the amounts of magnesium and calcium salts dissolved in water.
The recommended level is between 6 and 20°GH in fresh water, depending on the species kept.
The total hardness or GH value indicates the existing amount of dissolved magnesium and calcium salts.
These salts are directly responsible for many physiological processes in plants and animals.
In addition to physiological processes. The salts stabilize the KH value.
Some fish and plants need a higher GH level.
