Flourish Excel is a bioavailable organic carbon source. All plants require a carbon source. This is typically obtained by adding CO2, but can also be derived from simple organic compounds (such as photosynthetic intermediates). The use of CO2 injection or Flourish Excel does not necessarily eliminate the use of other CO2 methods.
Because the processes of producing and building photosynthetic intermediates occur simultaneously, substantial benefit can be obtained from the use of Flourish Excel, either alone or in combination with CO2.
The combination is particularly ideal for situations where continuing to add CO2 could lead to dangerously low Ph levels. Flourish Excel also has iron lowering properties that promote the ferrous state of iron (Fe + 2), which is more readily utilized by plants than ferric iron (Fe + 3).
The reason plants need CO2 is to produce longer chain carbon compounds also known as photosynthetic intermediates. Photosynthetic intermediates include compounds such as ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate and 2-carboxy-3-keto-D-arabinitol 1,5-bisphosphate.
By managing Flourish Excel, you remove the CO2 involvement and introduce the finished structurally similar compounds. It is in its structural similarity that Flourish Excel can be used in the process of creating the carbon chain of photosynthesis. Simple chemical or enzymatic steps can easily convert it to any one of the compounds mentioned above.

Instructions for use
At initial use or after a major water change (>40%), use 1 capful (5 ml) for every 40 liters of aquarium water. Thereafter, use 1 cap per 200 L per day or every other day. For smaller doses, please note that each screw cap is approximately 1 ml.
