Factors that increase the risk of kidney failure
Age Older dogs have a higher incidence of chronic renal failure.
There is a hereditary predisposition in some breeds for minor kidney disorders. Dogs of predisposed breeds are: Beagles, Cairn terriers, Cocker Spaniels, Dobermann Pinschers, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzus, and Soft Coated Wheaten terriers.
Diets with levels of phosphorus, protein, and sodium that are too high can accelerate the progression of kidney disease.
