Pathology - kidney problems What is chronic kidney failure?

The kidneys have several functions.  The most important are:

The elimination of waste products (for example, urea and creatinine) from the body through the urine

Regulation of electrolyte and mineral (potassium, sodium, calcium and phosphorus) levels

The production of hormones, one of which helps control blood pressure

Chronic kidney failure Kidney failure can be acute or chronic.  The most common type of kidney disease is chronic kidney failure (CKD), which is seen primarily in older dogs.  FCI is progressive and irreversible deterioration of kidney function.  Because the kidneys have a large reserve capacity, the first symptoms can only be recognized when app.  70% of the functional tissue of the kidney (the nephrons) is destroyed.  The sudden onset may apparently mimic an acute condition, but it is often a critical point in the development of CRF.

The kidneys of CKD patients lose their ability to concentrate urine.  The pet will urinate more often and compensate for the loss through more drinking water.  Ultimately, the levels of waste products build up in the blood to levels that begin to make the pet sick. Unfortunately, damaged kidney tissue cannot be repaired, but by using proper dietary management, it is possible to slow the progression of the disease, prolong the pet's life, and relieve symptoms.

Factors that increase the risk of kidney failure

Age Older dogs have a higher incidence of chronic renal failure.

Race

There is a hereditary predisposition in some breeds for minor kidney disorders.  Dogs of predisposed breeds are: Beagles, Cairn terriers, Cocker Spaniels, Dobermann Pinschers, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzus, and Soft Coated Wheaten terriers.

Specific kidney diets

Diets with levels of phosphorus, protein, and sodium that are too high can accelerate the progression of kidney disease.

Other factors

The occurrence of infection, obstruction of the urinary tract or the effect of a variety of toxins can lead to kidney failure.
