Tropical Marine Power Advanced Alkalinity
Designed for the automatic preparation of concentrated solutions to raise the level of KH: alkalinity (bicarbonate level) in a marine aquarium.
The preparation is mainly intended for larger tanks with a predominance of calcification pearls. The main active element of the preparation is a substance that increases the alkalinity of water.
In case of lower consumption of bicarbonates, we recommend using: EASY KH / ALKALINITY.
KH (alkalinity) is one of the most important parameters of the brine in the aquarium.
The alkalinity of water results directly from the presence of the bicarbonate anion (HCO3-).
The higher the amount of these ions in the water, the higher the KH water. Hydrogen carbonate ions belong to the buffering agents pH level of seawater , which in nature is almost constant.
Unfortunately, in home aquariums, the pH is subject to adverse daily fluctuations caused, among other things, by too low levels of KH.
Bicarbonate ions are also the main source of building material for coral shells, the basic component of which is calcium carbonate CaCO3. It is thanks to the appropriate level of KH (bicarbonates) that corals grow.
The optimal level of KH
The alkalinity of water in coral reefs is about 7 dKH. In most home marine tanks, the KH level should be kept as constant as possible in the 7-10 dKH range.
Raising KH too high or too fast is not recommended as it can be dangerous to LPS and SPS corals and can also negatively affect biofiltration processes.
In a properly functioning marine aquarium, bicarbonate ions (HCO3-) are steadily declining, primarily due to the consumption of calcium carbonate in the calcification process. Carbonates are consumed not only by calcifying beads (SPS and LPS), but also by mollusks (snails, bivalves) and calcareous algae.
Bicarbonate loss should be regularly supplemented with ALKALINITY. HCO3 consumption depends on many factors, such as water temperature, lighting, type of storage in the aquarium and others, and its level requires regular monitoring.
To determine the level of KH, we recommend MARINE POWER XACT TEST KH / ALKALINITY. Thanks to it, you can easily determine the current level of KH and its loss, for example, during the week.
